SCS Girls Varsity Basketball
St. Catharine’s Girls Capture Three Titles
The St. Catharine Girls Varsity basketball team added to their impressive accomplishments this season by winning both the Monmouth-Ocean County Parochial League and Monmouth County Athletic League championships last week and adding the Red Bank Catholic Tournament crown this past Sunday.
Last Sunday, the Lakers, who were undefeated during regular season play in each league, defeated St. Joseph, Toms River, 43-30 in the championship game of the parochial school playoffs held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Asbury Park. Michaela Mabrey led the team with 19 points, while Madeline Miksic added 4 points and a strong defensive effort in garnering MVP honors. Caitlin Marsicano contributed six points.
Two days later, the Lakers defeated Brielle Elementary 41 to 24 at Manasquan High School to win their second consecutive Monmouth County Athletic League title. The team was led by Michaela Mabrey’s 12 points, while Madeline Miksic and Michaela Dube chipped in with 8 and 6 points, respectively. Kara Blakeslee controlled the backboards for the Lakers and added 7 points.
Sunday, March 4, 2007, the St. Catharine girls rolled over Tinton Falls, 50 to 28, to capture the Red Bank Catholic Tournament crown. Michaela Mabrey scored 17 in the final game and earned MVP honors for the tournament. Kaitlin Marsicano had 10 points and Michaela Dube added 9 points in the final. Kaitlin Marsicano and Madeline Miksic were named to the first team all tournament.
Earlier this season, the St. Catharine team captured the Snowflake Classic tournament in Asbury Park. The Lakers are the top seed in the Run for the Roses Tournament currently underway at St. Rose High School and defeated Fair Haven in their initial outing on Saturday night.
